Meet Mrs. Joyce
EDUCATION
I earned my B.S. in Elementary Education from Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania in 2007 and my M.Ed. in Reading Education from Edinboro University in 2013. I am looking into doctoral programs, but will most likely hold off on that until next year! I am certified in Elementary Education (K-6), Middle School English, and as a K-12 Reading Specialist.
EXPERIENCE
This is my eighth year of teaching and my second year at Alston Ridge! I worked in Millcreek Township School District in Erie, PA for five years, teaching Kindergarten, 3rd, and 5th grades. I also coached collegiate dance at Gannon University during that time – I truly love teaching students of all ages! We moved to Raleigh in 2011 and I taught at River Bend Elementary for one year before finding my current home at Alston Ridge! I am a teacher mentor for Wake County, a member of the school improvement team, and grade level chairperson.
PERSONAL
When I am not teaching, I love to travel. My favorite places are Charleston, SC, San Francisco, CA, and my hometown of Erie, PA. My family has a small cottage on a lake in Michigan, where I absolutely love to go boating, jet-skiing, and kayaking. The dock is also my favorite place to read. (This is why my classroom always has a colorful, yet nautical theme!) I enjoy doing charity work for the American Cancer Society and CureSearch for Children's Cancer.
PHILOSOPHY
I believe in creating a community of learners and a maintaining a positive and safe environment for children. I believe in accountability and responsibility (we will work on this J) and praising positive behavior and choices. We always start the day with a “Morning Meeting” and build a sense of community from the beginning of each day.
My passion is literacy education; there is nothing more fulfilling to me than helping a child learn to read and write. Kindergarten is an amazing year and students grow so much during this time! I look forward to working with you and your child.
